“Due to Helene, there are no catchable trout.”
“Campsite had almost everything we needed. A shower on this side of the campsite and grills would make the site on this side of the road perfect. These site are a lot more spaced out and less people traffic than those on the river side.”
“Pretty to look at but could use some work. Road around park was noisy.”

Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area sits along the South Toe River at about 2,900 feet elevation, its campsites shaded by a dense stand of Carolina hemlocks with an understory of deciduous trees and rhododendron. The site layout includes 39 campsites in total: 35 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a defined tent pad, a lantern post, and a campfire ring with an attached grill for cooking. Restroom buildings have flush toilets and hot showers, and the recreation area sells basic camp supplies on site firewood, ice, and souvenir items such as T-shirts so you can travel lighter and pick up essentials at the campground rather than backtracking into town. The South Toe River is the centerpiece for day-use activity here: families and water-goers commonly swim and tube in calmer reaches, and anglers fish from shore for trout and smallmouth bass. A shaded picnic shelter provides a place to eat away from the sun, and hikers can choose a relaxed one-mile walk or a longer 3.8-mile route for more of a workout. If you want to extend an outing, the site is within driving distance of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Mitchell State Park for longer scenic drives and mountain hikes. Carolina Hemlocks is reached from the Asheville direction via I-26 and the US-19/NC-80 corridor toward Burnsville and Micaville; because fees, reservation rules, seasonal availability and any local access restrictions can change, check the Pisgah National Forest or the managing ranger district before you go to confirm current policies.
