“October is the best time to go. Mostly empty camping and the beach was very nice ”
“I've been camping at Ocracoke campground for quite some time and it never fails to disappoint! Wonderful places to explore, including the nature trail directly across from the campground, and many beaches, Ocracoke is magical! ”
“Nice campground, but the presence of gas RV generators running all the time makes sleeping difficult. Should break of the campground into tents & RV section so tent people can sleep. ”

Ocracoke Campground sits on the ocean side of Ocracoke Island, a ribbon of barrier sand within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and is reached only by ferry or small aircraft. The site sits on sandy soil and is separated from the surf by a line of barrier dunes; because of that soft sand you should bring extra-long tent stakes. The campground contains 136 total campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, distributed across five loops Loop A (24 sites), A Loop (5 sites), Loop B (41 sites), Loop C (29 sites), and Loop D (37 sites) so you'll usually find a mix of more open, breezy sites and slightly sheltered spots near dune grass. Basic comforts include flush toilets, drinking water, cold showers, and grills; reservations are handled exclusively online (Reservations only via recreation.gov) and note that a service fee may be charged for modifications and that a service fee will be withheld from refunds for cancellations. For facility-specific questions call (252) 475-9018. The campground puts you within easy reach of the broad activities the seashore supports: beaches for swimming and shelling, paddling and kayaking in calmer sound-side waters, windsurfing where conditions allow, and fishing and clamming along the shore. Bird and wildlife viewing are frequent pastimes here, and the wider park also offers auto touring, hiking, snorkeling, picnicking and hunting opportunities depending on season and location the campground itself is a straightforward base for beach recreation and wildlife watching. Practical town services are nearby on Ocracoke Village, about three miles to the west off NC-12, where you'll find restaurants, grocery stores, gift shops, a gas station and a tackle shop; the ferry terminal to Hatteras Inlet sits roughly ten miles east along NC-12.
