Cape Point Campground sits on Hatteras Island in the village of Buxton, a short walk through the dunes to the point where the Atlantic meets the surf and where fishing and surfing have drawn anglers and boarders for decades. The campground occupies the narrow strip between rolling ocean-side dunes and one of the largest remaining tracts of maritime forest on the North Carolina coast, so mornings often begin with the rattle of surf and the occasional glimpse of white-tailed deer slipping through the trees. A few minutes' walk takes you to the beach at Cape Hatteras for surf, swimming and shore fishing, and several off-road vehicle ramps are nearby if you plan to drive onto accessible beaches. For a different taste of the islands, the Buxton Woods Trail a 3/4-mile loop just north of the campground at the Buxton Woods Picnic Area on Lighthouse Road threads through maritime forest, and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and its Visitor Center (and the small Museum of the Sea) stand just up the road. Buxton Beach is an easy walk or bike ride from the campground and is staffed with lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Facilities and logistics at Cape Point are straightforward and built for high use: it's the largest campground on Cape Hatteras National Seashore with a total of 202 campsites, of which 153 accommodate both RVs and tents and 49 are tent sites only. Sites are arranged across eleven loops (A K) Loop A: 12 sites; B: 13; C: 16; D: 17; E: 18; F: 14; G: 16; H: 20; I: 25; J: 25; K: 24 and each site provides a paved parking pad, picnic table and a charcoal grill. There are no electrical or water hookups for RVs; rows D, E and F are reserved for tent camping only. Four restroom buildings with outdoor showers are spread through the campground and potable water spigots are readily available. Because the islands are low-lying and subject to ground saturation and flooding, Cape Point operates with a shortened reservation window check specific sites before paying and all reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; note that service fees may apply to modifications and will be withheld from refunds for cancellations. For facility-specific questions call (252) 475-9018. Activities within the seashore include auto touring, paddling, hiking, fishing, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and hunting in designated areas.
