“It was great camping in the rain. It was so relaxing; the host was kind and willing to help in every way to make your stay worthwhile and make you want to come back. ”
“Way too far from the festival. I stayed only on Friday. I'll stay in a hotel closer to the festival next time. Too bad Atlantic Beach does not have actual campgrounds. ”

Oyster Point Campground sits along the banks of the Newport River inside Croatan National Forest, a low-elevation coastal pine and wetland landscape where flatwater paddling and estuary fishing are the daily draw. The site inventory is small and specific: a total of 15 campsites, and each of those sites is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents (non-electric). Every site includes a picnic table, metal fire grill, tent pad, parking spur and lantern post, and the loop is served by two vault toilets. One of the 15 sites is managed strictly as first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved; the remaining sites take reservations, which must be made at least three days before arrival (reservations are non-refundable and can be booked up to 180 days in advance). The campground is reached from Newport via SR 1154 and Forest Road 181 and is a short drive from Atlantic Beach and coastal fishing ports; nearby Newport and Morehead City provide groceries, fuel and restaurant options if you need supplies. The river access here supports canoeing, kayaking and fishing powerboats are allowed on the Newport River but the boat launch at Oyster Point is a small hand-launch with no vehicle access, so expect to carry craft or use a cart/dolly. Oyster Point is also a trailhead for the 21-mile Neusiok Trail and sits along waterways connected to the Croatan Saltwater Trail, making it a good base for paddling long stretches between sound and river. Expect simple, low-cost camping: single standard non-electric sites are $10 per night (8-person limit) and double sites $20 per night (16-person limit); the America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes qualify for half off the basic single-site fee. Payment must be made within 30 minutes of arrival (if you arrive and set up before 5 a.m. you are required to pay for the previous night), and a $10 fee applies to reservation cancellations; scan-and-pay electronic payment is available only for first-come, first-served sites and adds up to $1 per day processing always check with the campground host to confirm availability before paying, as failure to do so can lead to loss of your camping fee.
