Flanners Beach Campground sits on a bluff above the Neuse River in the Neuse River Recreation Area, roughly midway between New Bern and Morehead City along US 70 and about a half-hour drive from the Atlantic beaches and Intracoastal Waterway. The river here is a broad coastal waterway where salty tidal flow mixes with fresh, widening to roughly two miles where those waters meet before flowing into Bogue Sound a few miles downstream; that mix makes the area popular for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. A three-mile non-motorized trail runs through the recreation area for walkers and birders, and hunting is a common regional activity (note that some water access for hunting and other water uses may be at alternate launch points rather than from the campground). Nearby cultural and coastal attractions include the Crystal Coast beaches, historic Beaufort, Tryon Palace and Fort Macon for day trips after a morning on the river. Because the campground is frequently busy, plan to reserve a site well in advance or arrive early for one of the first-come, first-served spots. The campground has 39 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; 22 sites provide electrical hookups with 20/30/50-amp service, and two sites are configured as double sites. Seven of the 39 are designated first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved; Scan & Pay electronic payments may be used only for those FCFS sites and can add up to $2.25 per day in processing fees. Reservations are recommended and can be made from 180 days up to 3 days before arrival (reservations must be completed at least 3 days prior to prevent double bookings); reservation fees are extra and nonrefundable, and there is a $10 cancellation fee (canceling within three days of arrival may forfeit one or more nights' fees). On arrival you must pay for your site within 30 minutes and if you arrive/setup before 5:00 a.m. you will be charged for the previous night with standard single non-electric sites at $20/night, single electric at $25/night, and double electric at $50/night; America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes reduce the basic single-site fee by half (no discount for electric sites). The campground offers a bathhouse with private hot showers, an adjacent day-use picnic area, and enforces 1:00 p.m. check-in, 11:00 a.m. check-out and a 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period. Note that access to the river's beach has been closed since Hurricane Florence and will remain so until planned restoration work is finished, and always check in with the campground host on arrival to confirm site availability before paying for any non-reserved space.
