North Mills River Campground sits in Pisgah National Forest at about 2,200 feet, where hardwood slopes and nearby peaks frame a quietly rivered valley just outside Asheville. The facility is intentionally small 25 campsites in two loops that sit on opposite banks of the Mills River so sites feel private and most are shaded and only a short walk from the water. Of those sites, 20 accommodate both RVs and tents, one is RV-only and four are tent-only, and there's a separate group area placed right beside the river's shallow, child-friendly channel. Campground amenities are practical and well-suited to overnight stays: each campsite includes a picnic table, tent pad, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill; restrooms offer flush toilets and hot showers, and you can buy firewood and fire starter on-site. Outdoor options concentrate on the river and the forested ridges around it. Mills River is known locally for trout fishing and for easy tubing and swimming spots that families use in warm weather, while a network of nearby trails supports hiking and mountain biking; interpretive and educational programs are scheduled during the summer. If you want to combine a river campsite with broader day trips, the campground is a short drive from attractions such as Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the town of Brevard and the arts and dining scene in Asheville are close enough for an afternoon visit. Because the site is small, plan ahead contact the campground at (828) 577-4167 for current fees, reservation and seasonal availability and remember that the surrounding National Forest offers additional activities ranging from auto touring and wildlife viewing to horseback riding and climbing on other sites in the forest. To reach the campground from Asheville, follow U.S. 280 west and take North Mills River Road to the facility.
