“My favorite site. Greenway in rear of site has large opening in forest. Allows me to receive 2 or 3 different over the air HDTV channels and at least one bar of Verizon service. ”
“Big wooded private sites! Bathrooms were exceptionally clean & pretty good water pressure! Staff of workers were really great! 20 min or so from Asheville! Can't wait to go back!”

Lake Powhatan sits in the Appalachian foothills at about 2,200 feet, a heavily wooded campground hugging the lake's shore just a short drive south of downtown Asheville (roughly 10 minutes via I-26 to State Route 191). The facility contains 71 total campsites arranged into four walks-and-quiet loops Bent Creek (12 sites), Big John (18), Hard Times (24), and Lakeside (17) and offers a mix of accommodations: 30 sites that serve both RVs and tents, 17 RV-only sites, and 24 tent-only sites. Twelve custom, fully furnished canvas platform "glamping" tents have been added in the upper Hard Times loop for visitors who want more creature comforts; those tents and all campsites are bookable through Recreation.gov. The campground provides common amenities you'll actually use: picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, campfire rings with grills, restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, and a few sites with full RV hookups. Ice and firewood are sold at the gatehouse, and for any facility-specific questions you can call (828) 577-7278. Note that cancellations and reservations are handled through Recreation.gov and the site does not refund no-shows or inclement-weather cancellations. Recreation at Lake Powhatan centers on the water and the surrounding forest. There's a sandy swimming beach on the lake and calm waters where anglers fish for trout (personal watercraft are strictly prohibited to protect the lake's riparian ecosystem), while the French Broad River is also nearby for additional fishing and boating opportunities. Numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails thread the national forest around the campground, and the broader National Forests in North Carolina provide a wide range of activities from auto touring on the Blue Ridge Parkway and scenic drives to wildlife viewing, picnicking, climbing, horseback riding, and hunting in permitted areas so you can pair a campsite stay with cultural options in Asheville or visits to nearby sights like Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, the NC Arboretum, and the Biltmore Estate.
