About

Wade Lake Campground sits on the forested slope above a clear, spring-fed 200-acre lake at about 6,217 feet, where stands of Douglas fir shade the narrow terraces of campsites. The campground offers 27 sites in total: 25 that accommodate both RVs and tents and two walk-in tent-only sites. Each individual site includes a picnic table and a metal fire ring, and visitors will find five vault toilets and five drinking-water spigots spread through the loops (water is turned on seasonally, roughly May through September). Roadways and campsites hug a steep hillside, so many upper-loop sites have limited flat ground for tents often the only level spot is the parking driveway and trailers longer than 24 feet are not recommended because of narrow roads and tight curves. A natural-surface boat launch accepts small boats and trailers, and the lake enforces a no-wake limit; there is minimal day-use parking and no on-site garbage service, and bear-proof food-storage bins are provided to meet food-storage rules. Cell service can be spotty there may be reception near the Forest boundary about 1.5 miles away and snow can restrict access early and late in the season. All sites are reservation-only; certain sites have limited booking windows (sites 6, 13, 17, 20 and 25 are reservable only within two weeks of arrival; sites 2, 9, 14 and 22 only within four days; all others open six months in advance). Note that reservation fees become nonrefundable within 14 days of arrival and date changes may incur additional NRRS charges. For facility-specific questions call (406) 682-4253. The setting makes Wade Lake a practical base for anglers, paddlers and people seeking nearby trails: the lake holds rainbow and brown trout and boats can be rented at nearby Wade Lake Resort, while the world-renowned Madison River lies roughly five miles away for additional fly-fishing options. Trails start at the campground and extend into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and the surrounding Gravelly Range, where hiking, wildlife viewing, ATV riding and horseback opportunities are common (there are abundant off-road trails in the Gravelly Range, though none run through the immediate campground). Cliff Lake and Cliff Point Campground are under a mile away, and larger recreation areas such as Hebgen Lake, Henry's Lake and the Earthquake Lake geologic site are a short drive; the west entrance to Yellowstone is about 35 miles east. Expect clear aquamarine water, frequent sightings of deer and moose, eagles and waterfowl, and the occasional bear all reminders to store food properly and follow Leave No Trace practices.
