About

Madison River Campground sits at about 5,910 feet on the west side of the Madison River, a stretch of water world-famous for fly fishing. The campground contains 11 sites that accept both RVs and tents; each site includes a picnic table and a metal fire ring, and the loop follows a one-way road that parallels the river. Facilities are basic but functional: two vault toilets, four drinking-water spigots (typically turned on from May through September, weather-dependent), and metal bear-proof food storage bins to meet food-storage regulations. There is no garbage pickup, so plan to pack out trash. Cell service is available, but note an access constraint for large rigs the Old Kirby Bridge on the approach has a posted maximum height of 12 feet 7 inches and a weight limit of four tons, which may restrict larger motorhomes or trailers. The riverside setting and nearby public lands shape most visitor activities. Across the gravel road the Madison provides about 40 miles of blue-ribbon trout water; anglers find excellent fly-fishing opportunities right from the riverbank. A short drive reaches Wade and Cliff Lakes (about ten miles) for additional fishing, small-craft boating, canoeing and swimming, while Hebgen and Henry's Lakes are roughly a 30-minute drive. Hikers can access trails leading into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness about two miles to the west, and the Gravelly Range offers popular off-road vehicle and horseback routes. Riverview and West Fork Campgrounds sit under a mile away and are managed on a first-come, first-served basis, and the West Entrance to Yellowstone is on the order of a 40 45 mile drive. Reservations are possible for sites here, but note that fees become non-refundable within 14 days of your arrival date and that changes to reserved dates may incur additional fees through the National Recreation Reservation Service; also, Campsite 8 is subject to a two-week advance-booking window.
