Moose Creek Group Site sits beside the Gallatin River and Moose Creek in Gallatin Canyon on the Bozeman Ranger District, about 32 miles south of Bozeman on Highway 191 at roughly 5,700 feet elevation. The campground is a single group site the one numbered site on the map designed to host both RVs and tents and sized to accommodate up to 90 people for group picnicking or camping. The clearing is partly framed by pine and fir, and the pull-off is reached by a short gravel road of roughly 200 yards from the highway (it's about a quarter-mile south of the main Moose Creek Flat Campground). On-site amenities are basic but serviceable: picnic tables, campfire rings and vault toilets. There is no drinking water or trash collection, so plan to bring your own water and pack out all garbage; for facility-specific questions, call (623) 910-0170. Outdoor opportunities concentrate on the river corridor and the canyon's trail network. The Gallatin River offers fishing for rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout, as well as whitefish and Arctic grayling, and stretches of the river are popular with rafters and kayakers. Hikers will find nearby trailheads: the Swan Creek Trail begins at adjacent Swan Creek Campground, and the Golden Trout Lakes Trail starts a short drive up Portal Creek Road (about 15 minutes from the site, three miles to the south). Wildlife viewing is a frequent draw here bald eagles, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, mountain goats, deer and coyotes are all commonly seen, and black and grizzly bears inhabit the canyon as well, so carry bear-aware gear and follow safe food-storage practices. Beyond the immediate site, Custer Gallatin National Forest supports a wide range of activities including auto touring, biking, boating, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, swimming and winter sports; check with the ranger district for current access conditions, fees, reservation requirements and seasonal closures before you go.
