“The campground was very quiet which was nice. The outhouse was not very clean and toilet paper had not been restocked. ”

Red Mountain Campground sits on the lower Madison River and functions as a convenient base for anglers and people looking to float or tube stretches of the river. The site contains 18 campsites that can accommodate both RVs and tents, and the layout is low-key picnic tables at each site, a horseshoe pit for passing time, and three accessible vault toilets spread through the loop. Drinking water is available on-site and a volunteer seasonal campground host is typically present; when they are there you can buy firewood. There is no boat launch at Red Mountain itself, but multiple public launches and fishing access points lie up- and downstream the campground is roughly midway between the Warm Springs boat launch and Black's Ford Fishing Access Site so it's easy to stage river days from here. The lower Madison is well known for trout, and during warm months non-angling floaters are common, so expect the campground to fill on summer weekends and see lighter use on weekdays. Practical details are straightforward: sites may be reserved for the peak season (May 1 September 15); from September 16 through April 30 sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The nightly fee is $12 per site, with additional vehicles charged $5 each (maximum three vehicles per campsite; a truck and camper trailer count as one vehicle), and any extra vehicles must be paid for on-site. If you don't arrive on the first night of a reservation, your reservation will be forfeited and the site may be made available to someone else. For current conditions or questions, the Dillon Field Office handles Red Mountain information their main phone for general inquiries is (406) 683-8000; the field office address is 1005 Selway Drive, Dillon, MT 59725, and Chris McGrath can be reached at cmcgrath@blm.gov. More details are available on the BLM page for the campground: https://www.blm.gov/visit/red-mountain-campground.
