“Prettier than we expected. Would have loved to have more time to experience the river. We used it as a quick road trip pit stop but it was beautiful and perfectly comfortable. Water worked, wasn’t too windy & our 3 kids (6, 4 & 2) had fun exploring.”
“Private! Great location. Easy parking space. ”

Trapper Springs Campground sits beside the lower Madison River on the south side of MT-84, a short drive from the stretch of highway between Bozeman and Norris and roughly halfway between the Warm Springs boat launch and Black's Ford Fishing Access Site. The campground has 16 sites in total: 15 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site, laid out to give easy river access without a formal boat launch on site. A day-use area fronts the river and includes a large group pavilion with parking for about 20 vehicles and an ADA-accessible trail that leads down to the Madison; the pavilion can be reserved for $50 per day. Practical facilities include drinking water, three accessible vault toilets, fire pits and picnic tables at the campsites, and an ADA trail to the river. Firewood is available for purchase at nearby Red Mountain Campground when the volunteer host is present. The lower Madison here is known for trout fishing and becomes a busy tubing and floating corridor in warm months, so expect both anglers and non-angling floaters. Nine of Trapper Springs' sites can be reserved during the peak season (May 1 September 15); after September 15 and through April 30 all sites are first-come, first-served. If you make a reservation and do not arrive on the first night, your reservation will be forfeited and the site may be reissued. Groups larger than 15 people need an organized group permit; the Dillon Field Office (1005 Selway Drive, Dillon, MT; phone 406-682-4082; contact Chris McGrath, cmcgrath@blm.gov) handles permits and questions. Nearby points of interest include the Bear Trap Canyon unit of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area and Norris Hot Springs, and several public boat launches lie within easy driving distance for longer floats.
