Davis Lake Campground sits along the eastern shore of a 200-acre lake set in rolling hardwood and pine forest about 20 miles south of Tupelo and roughly 12 miles north of Houston, Mississippi. The recreation area offers 27 campsites all configured to accept both RVs and tents with roughly 14 of those clustered on the lakeshore where many campers can tie up small boats. On-site recreation centers on the water: a grassy swimming beach, multiple fishing docks (including accessible docks), and a 2-mile earthen trail that follows the lake's north edge to several fishing piers. Anglers commonly catch largemouth and hybrid striped bass, crappie, catfish and bream; boat launching and day boating are popular in fair weather. Campsites come with picnic tables, lantern posts, campfire rings with grills and drinking water; the recreation area also provides accessible flush toilets and a dump station. The site is unstaffed for questions call the main office at (662) 285-3264 and fees run $14 per night for single-family campsites with an additional $6 utility fee added to that rate. Beyond the lake, Davis Lake is a convenient hub for a wider range of outdoor pursuits. The Chickasaw OHV Trail, a recently renovated 12-mile motorized route, lies within three miles of the campground (the trailhead sits between Davis Lake and the Natchez Trace Parkway) and accommodates off-road vehicles up to 48 inches wide; it is open April 1 through October 31, so check seasonal restrictions before heading out. Cyclists and hikers can reach the 43.5-mile Tanglefoot Rails-to-Trails path about five miles west. Horseback riders also have options nearby, including the 18-mile Witchdance Horsetrail accessed from Payamatha or a Natchez Trace trailhead. For groups, the picnic shelter (GS1) can be reserved on-site $40 per day for groups under 50, $80 for groups over 50 and each vehicle using a rented pavilion must pay a $5 day-use fee (this fee applies to the renter as well). The campground's proximity to the Natchez Trace Parkway and local historical and natural sites makes it a practical base for mixed-activity trips that combine boating, fishing, birding and trail use.
