Dewayne Hayes Campground sits along Columbus Lake on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and puts the water within easy reach for anglers and small-boat paddlers. The site offers 108 campsites in all: 98 sites set up to accommodate both RVs and tents (with electric and water hookups) and 10 tent-only primitive walk-in sites, so groups can choose a hookup site or a quieter backcountry pitch. Sites are partially shaded and come with picnic tables, fire rings with grills, pedestal grills and lantern posts; the campground also provides hot showers and a fish-cleaning station for those who bring in a catch. Families will find playgrounds, picnic areas and multiple-use courts nearby, and there are short hiking trails and interpretive programs at the recreation area for younger visitors and adults who want a bit of educational programming alongside their outdoor time. The Tenn-Tom itself is a working waterway that spans 234 miles and links inland river traffic to the Gulf, and Dewayne Hayes is a convenient base for exploring that system by boat or from the shore anglers commonly seek bass, walleye, crappie, catfish and sunfish along these banks. Hunting opportunities for upland game and waterfowl exist on surrounding Tenn-Tom lands for licensed hunters when seasons are open. Columbus, Mississippi, is a short drive away and provides fuel, groceries, antique shops and historic sites if you need supplies or a break from camp.
