Watercress Campground sits on the banks of the Current River in the town of Van Buren, offering direct access to the river's long bends, bluffs and springs that define this stretch of southeastern Missouri. The river is the main draw here: boaters and canoeists launch from a public ramp on the east bank (open to both motorized and non-motorized craft) for multi-day floats or shorter day trips that reveal springs, caves and riverside scenery you don't see from the road. Anglers commonly catch bass, walleye, sunfish and the occasional catfish, and birdwatchers and other wildlife viewers will find plenty to watch along the riparian corridor. Hikers can stretch their legs on the nearby 1.2-mile Songbird Trail, which leads to Watercress Spring and passes remnants of Civil War-era earthworks, while Big Spring Missouri's largest spring lies about five miles away. The campground is adjacent to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, so you're a short hop from additional river access and National Park Service resources. Practical facilities at Watercress are straightforward and geared toward river recreation: the campground contains 17 total campsites, and each of those 17 sites functions for both RVs and tents; sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and each comes with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided on site. Two group picnic shelters sit alongside the river and each can accommodate up to 75 people, equipped with tables and grills, though visitors should note that several pavilions sustained substantial flood damage in 2017 and are not reservable at this time. A seasonal trash collection dumpster is located at the campground entrance from April 1 through October 1. The area is reached from Highway 60 by heading into Van Buren and following signs for Watercress Road and the Park Service complex to the Watercress Recreation Area.
