Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area sits on the edge of a 32-acre lake in the southeastern quadrant of Mark Twain National Forest, surrounded by dense oak and pine woods that attract songbirds, small wildlife and a profusion of wildflowers in season. A 1.3-mile loop trail circles the water; most of it is concrete, relatively flat and wheelchair-accessible, so the whole circuit is easy on feet and prams while offering steady water views and plenty of places to stop and watch birds. The closest town is Ellsinore, about three miles away, where you'll find a handful of restaurants, a grocery and fuel; from Poplar Bluff the site is reached by heading north on U.S. 67 and then east on U.S. 60 into the Mark Twain National Forest area. Facilities at Pinewoods Lake are oriented to day-use recreation: a covered picnic shelter large enough for about 75 people comes with built-in tables and oversized grills, there are accessible vault toilets, a floating fishing pier and a concrete boat ramp for launching small boats. Anglers routinely fish for bass, sunfish and catfish from the pier or from boats; there is no information in the Recreation.gov database about campsite counts or hookup availability, and the site description does not list trash service visitors are required to carry out their garbage. Because fees, reservation windows and seasonal access were not provided in the available data, plan to check the Mark Twain National Forest website or Recreation.gov before you go, and pack basic supplies and insect protection for a self-reliant visit.
