Big M Campground sits on a wide, grassy bench along the White River Arm of Table Rock Lake, surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Ozark Mountains and forests of oak and hickory. The site layout accommodates both RVs and tents there are 62 campsites in all, each able to support either type of camping and basic comforts are on hand: electric hookups, drinking water, hot showers and a dump station. A short walk from the loop brings you to a large marina and boat ramp, so launching a boat or topping off fuel is convenient; the marina and the campground's swim area (adjacent to a volleyball court) and playground make the loop popular with families. To reserve a site, call the central reservations line at (877) 444-6777 gate attendants at Big M can answer questions in person but cannot make reservations by phone. Recreation at Big M leans heavily on the lake: anglers come for crappie, catfish and bluegill, but Table Rock's largemouth, smallmouth, white and spotted bass draw competitive anglers and a steady calendar of tournaments. Boating, scuba diving and other water sports are easy to arrange from the nearby marina, and several commercial boat cruises operate on the lake seasonally. On land, a slice of the Table Rock Lakeshore Trail runs nearby (about 2 miles from the Dewey Short Visitor Center to the state park marina), where spring wildflowers and dogwood give way to vivid fall color; additional hiking and mountain-biking opportunities are available where the Mark Twain National Forest borders the park. The Dewey Short Visitor Center at the south end of the dam offers interpretive films and exhibits including an emphasis on regional natural history and eagles and a courtesy dock for boaters, so Big M works well for campers interested in fishing, boating, picnicking, wildlife viewing and environmental education as much as a simple lakeside retreat.
