Mille Lacs Kathio State Park's cultural and archaeological significance has made it a National Historic Landmark. People have passed through or lived in this area for at least 9,000 years. Stop at the visitor center to learn about the area's rich heritage and the park's other treasures. Climb the 100-foot fire tower to experience wonderful views of Mille Lacs Lake. Take part in one of the park's interpretive/nature programs, or get out and hike the many trails. The park has a swimming area, where children like to search for tadpoles and minnows. Rent a canoe or kayak, and paddle or just relax on the scenic Rum River and connected lakes. In the winter, cross-country ski or snowshoe on woodland trails, or try sledding on the park's popular sliding hill. Wildlife The river, lakes and trails provide excellent wildlife viewing. Hawks, ospreys, owls and eagles are common. Catch a glimpse of vibrant birds like the red-headed woodpecker, scarlet tanager, Baltimore oriole or indigo bunting. The tracks of beaver, raccoon, otter, mink and deer are often seen on the trail or in the snow. Northern Pike, walleye, bluegills, sunfish and bass inhabit the waters. The aspen stands and small clearings are excellent for ruffed grouse. Squirrels and chipmunks thrive in maple and oak stands. The small ponds and streams provide homes for amphibians and insects, which in turn attract larger fish, birds and mammals. Naturalist Naturalist programs are available year-round. Geology The park's geological history is a story of immense natural forces at work over thousands of years. The hills were formed approximately 10,000 years ago when a major glacier stopped its advance south. As the glacier melted, it deposited gravel, rocks and boulders that it had accumulated in its grinding passage. The resulting landform is called a terminal moraine. The glacial debris partially blocked the land's natural drainage and in effect became a huge dam, creating a lake even larger than the present day Mille Lacs. This ancient lake had three outlets and a shoreline that was roughly 15 feet higher than today's lake. A long period of geological and vegetational succession followed. The current park - its soil, vegetation and wildlife - is the result of these thousands of years of constant natural progression. Landscape Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is primarily a second-growth forest of aspen, birch, maple, oak and other northern hardwoods. Wetlands are abundant throughout the park. Scattered stands of conifers provide diversity to the landscape and a hint of what the forest looked like a century ago. History The park name is steeped in history. "Mille Lacs," a French term used by early explorers and fur traders, means "a thousand lakes," and referred to the region. The word "Kathio" has a more complicated story. In 1679, when European explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur duLhut visited, he collectively referred to the area as "Izatys," his phoneticism of a name the Mdewekanton Dakota people gave themselves. His poor handwriting caused a wrong transcription of the word "Izatys." Even though the word itself means nothing, "Kathio" became so attached to the area that the park bears that name today. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is one of the most significant archeological sites in Minnesota, with over 30 sites identified. The earliest site shows evidence of at least 9,000 years of human interaction with the landscape. Hundreds of years before Europeans settled in the region, the Dakota people established permanent villages along the shores of area waters. These people came to be known as the Mdewakanton, which translated means "Water of the Great Spirit." In 1680, Father Louis Hennepin was one of the earliest European explorers to travel through this region. He lived with the Dakota for six months on a point of land where the Rum River leaves the park on the southeastern boundary. The French explorer, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur duLuth is also known to have visited this region the year before. The 18th century increasingly became a time of change. By then, many bands of Dakota had relocated to the area that is now southern Minnesota. At the same time, the Ojibwe were entering the region from the east and brought their own rich cultural tradition with them. The Ojibwe settled along the shore of Mille Lacs, Ogechie Lake and other natural areas. This area continued to supply the needs of yet another group of people, providing wild rice, fish, waterfowl and other foods, medicines and supplies. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe continue to live in the Mille Lacs area today. In the mid-1800s loggers began drastically changing the area. For decades, they cut the vast forest of white and red pines and floated them down the Rum River, or across Mille Lacs Lake to sawmills. To learn more, stop by the visitor center or attend a naturalist program.
