Father Hennepin State Park is located on the southeast shore of Mille Lacs Lake. Visitors enjoy a large sandy beach for swimming, two boat accesses, accessible fishing piers and picnic sites with a panoramic view of the lake. The park's 344 acres include two campgrounds and two group camps. The hiking trails wind through a hardwood forest and along the rocky shoreline of Mille Lacs Lake. History Indigenous people lived in this region for thousands of years before Europeans came here. The park is named after Father Louis Hennepin, a priest who visited the area in 1680 and stayed with the Dakota for six months. Hennepin is not thought to have been in the exact location of the park, but he was one of the first Europeans to visit and write extensively about the Mille Lacs area. Geology The park's geological history is a story of immense natural forces at work over thousands of years. The small but abrupt hills are part of a terminal moraine, that was formed approximately 10,000 years ago when a major glacier stopped its advance south. As the glacier melted, it deposited gravel, rocks, and boulders that it had accumulated during its grinding passage from the northeast. The resulting landform is referred to as terminal moraine. The glacial debris partially blocked the land's natural drainage pattern and in effect became a huge dam, creating an extensive lake of meltwater. This ancient lake was much larger than the present Mille Lacs Lake, it had three outlets and a shoreline 15 feet higher. A long period of geological and vegetational succession followed. The outlet streams cut deep channels. Ponds and small lakes drained away. Wave and ice action built up beach ridges. Drainage patterns and the shape of lakes altered. Silt and vegetation filled many of the depressions. The present park - its soil, vegetation, and wildlife - is the result of these thousands of years of constant natural progression. Naturalist The best way to learn more about Father Hennepin State Park is to stop at the park office for a map and information about the park. Although the park does not have a naturalist on staff, activities are offered occasionally. Landscape The park is mainly a mixed hardwood forest with pockets of pines, bogs, and swamps scattered throughout. The hardwoods provide shade during the summer and beautiful color in the fall. Wildlife Father Hennepin State Park is home to a variety of wildlife. Hawks, ospreys, owls, and eagles are common. The tracks of beaver, raccoon, mink and deer are often seen in the soft earth or snow. Northern pike, walleye, bluegills, sunfish and bass are found in the lake. The aspen stands and small clearings are excellent for ruffed grouse. The small ponds and streams provide homes for amphibians and insects, which in turn attract larger fish, birds and mammals.
