Located on the Mississippi River, Charles A. Lindbergh State Park offers visitors a wooded campground, hiking trails, and a quaint picnic area. The picnic area includes a historic Work Projects Administration (WPA) picnic shelter and a stone water tower. Fish the waters of the Mississippi River, canoe Pike Creek, or walk the trails amid grand red and white pine, aspen, oak and prairie. Look for bald eagles year round. Naturalist The best way to learn more about Charles A. Lindbergh State Park is to call or stop at the office for information. Although the park does not have a naturalist on staff, activities are offered occasionally. Landscape The original vegetation consisted of pine forest with oak and grassland openings. Today, the forest is comprised of oak, with some aspen and conifers. A prairie section is located in the northwest portion of the park. Wildlife The Mississippi River provides habitat for waterfowl such as mallard, teal, wood duck, mergansers, goldeneye and Canada geese. Other common wildlife sited in the park include bald eagle, fox, white-tailed deer, raccoons, owls, and hawks. The areas along the Mississippi River and Pike Creek are ideal for searching out warblers and other songbirds. History The park is named after Charles A. Lindbergh Sr. Congressman Lindbergh served Central Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1907 to 1917. His son Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. successfully flew the first trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 and immediately became a national hero. Geology This area was formed by glaciers some 100,000 to 10,000 years ago. The park is located on a till plain, a flat area where unsorted clay, sand, gravel and boulders were deposited. The boulders, which can be seen in the stream bed of Pike Creek under the southern trail bridge, are fragments of the Thomson formation. The boulders are composed of slate. The Mississippi River cuts through this formation approximately one mile north of the park in Little Falls.
