Pokegama Dam Campground (pronounced "po-KEG-uh-muh") sits on the banks of the Mississippi River within northern Minnesota's lake country, surrounded by a mixed hardwood forest and stands of tall red pine. The site count is small and manageable 22 campsites in all, with 19 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and three tent-only sites and the campground's footprint keeps most sites within a short walk of the river. Basic comforts are in place: flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station and a fish-cleaning station, plus a day-use picnic shelter with electricity and a playground for kids. A boat ramp provides direct water access, and the site's layout and modest size give a quieter, more intimate feel than larger state parks. Fishing and boating are the main draws here: the Mississippi and Pokegama Lake support walleye, northern pike, bluegill and sunfish as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass, and the ramp and cleaning station make a one-day or multi-day fishing outing straightforward. Birdwatchers frequent the banks looking for loons, ducks, geese and bald eagles, and the forest floor produces seasonal berries blackberries, raspberries and blueberries that add a light harvest to summer hikes. Nearby cultural and recreational stops within easy driving distance include the Judy Garland Museum, the Forest History Center, the Itasca County Historical Society, the Children's Discovery Museum, Tioga Beach and the Mesabi Trail. The campground is just west of Grand Rapids off Highway 2 (follow park signs from town); for current fees, reservation windows and seasonal opening dates, check the managing agency's website before you go.
