Peterson Bridge Campground sits directly on the Pine River within Michigan's Manistee portion of the Huron-Manistee National Forests, a nearly one-million-acre public landscape between Lakes Michigan and Huron. The Pine River here is a swift, cold-water stream with a 7% gradient; depending on the season it registers the fastest average flow of any river in the lower peninsula, and the lower 26 miles have been designated a National Wild and Scenic River. That flow makes the campground a natural base for canoeing and floating canoe rentals are available at several nearby locations and the river's cold, clear water supports a "Blue Ribbon" trout fishery (check state fishing regulations at http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/). Beyond paddling and fishing, the surrounding national forest offers a wide range of outdoor pursuits: hiking, wildlife viewing, biking and horseback riding, auto touring, off-highway vehicle use, picnicking and other water-based recreation. The facility is compact and largely low-key: there are 31 total campsites, of which 18 can accommodate both RVs and tents and 13 are tent-only. Several tent sites are walk-in only, and the riverbank tent sites can also be reached from the water, while RV sites at the campground are noted for shade and a feeling of seclusion. The campground's access is straightforward on Highway 3T at the Pine River bridge just south of M-55 roughly 21 miles north of Baldwin on M-37 so it's easy to reach from either direction without lengthy backroads. Specifics about fees, reservations and seasonal openings aren't provided here, so plan to check the Huron-Manistee National Forests web pages or contact the local ranger district for up-to-date information before you go; bring appropriate gear for quick river conditions and for a mostly rustic riverside camping experience.
