“Beautiful campsite, plenty of firewood available, good access to hiking trails, very nice vault toilets. The only thing that could be improved would be offering road access to the campsite in the winter months. ”
“Plenty of shade, lots of room, flat field for games, perfect fire ring with log seating. The girls said, "These are the nicest pit toilets I've ever seen!" Five stars.”

Poplar Grove Youth Group Campground is a back-to-basics site intended for organized youth groups and outdoor programs, located in the western section of Catoctin Mountain Park near the Catoctin National Recreation Trail in the rolling hills outside Thurmont, Maryland. The campground contains three group sites (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 3) that are listed as both RV and tent sites, and the three sites together can accommodate up to 25 visitors. Sites sit on flat, tree-sheltered ground within a hardwood deciduous forest and each has a campfire circle and a grill; the central pavilion and a single potable water spigot serve all groups. Facilities are deliberately primitive: two vault toilets are available but there are no handwashing sinks, and the shared water spigot may be turned off in sub-zero temperatures, so plan accordingly. Firewood is provided onsite and collecting dead wood is allowed. Vehicle parking is strictly limited to two vehicles per group site (or one vehicle plus one unhitched utility trailer); additional vehicles must be left at Camp Round Meadow, and overnight parking is not permitted on Manahan Road. Access is by gravel road in summer, but seasonal road closures mean the campground is hike-in from winter through spring. The location is geared toward traditional wilderness skills and low-infrastructure programming: short nature hikes, campfire circles and trail-based activities are common, and the Catoctin portion of the long-distance recreation trail is only steps away. For broader recreation, Catoctin Mountain Park offers roughly 25 miles of trails and parkwide activities that include camping, climbing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking. The Visitor Center, about four miles away, runs interpretive programs, and Cunningham Falls State Park three miles distant provides fishing and canoeing (note that Cunningham Falls charges a daily entrance fee). Reservations and questions are handled by the Visitor Center (9:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.) at 1 (301) 663-9388; after-hours dispatch numbers are 1-866-677-6677 or 301-714-2235. Be aware of the reservation cancellation policy: a cancellation the day before or the day of arrival is considered late and will incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total amount paid); a one-night reservation cancelled results in forfeiture of the entire amount paid (with no additional service fee).
