Camp Round Meadow sits on the forested slopes of Catoctin Mountain Park, in the eastern Blue Ridge near Thurmont and Sabillasville, Maryland. The site is part of a park born of New Deal-era programs the Civilian Conservation Corps first used this camp in 1939 41 and it later served as the nation's first Job Corps center so the camp's hardier institutional character reflects that history. For individual campers the park lists one campsite that accommodates both RVs and tents; the broader park supports a range of outdoor pursuits hiking, fishing (by permit within Catoctin and nearby Cunningham Falls State Park), climbing, horseback riding, picnicking, and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing where conditions allow. Pets are allowed on park trails but must be on a six-foot leash. Cunningham Falls, about three miles from the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center, provides swimming and boating opportunities, and the Appalachian Trail and several historic sites lie within a short drive for day trips. The camp itself is built to host groups: up to 120 guests across four dormitories, each dormitory fitted with 30 twin beds (vinyl-covered mattresses), two bathrooms with two flush toilets, an accessible hot shower and two sinks, plus two bottle-filling water stations. Common facilities include a 1,746 sq. ft. dining hall that seats 116 and an adjacent 384 sq. ft. commercial kitchen furnished for four kitchen staff and equipped with major appliances; a gymnasium with an indoor court; classrooms; and a 765 sq. ft. conference room with seating and a projector screen. Dining hall, kitchen, gym and conference spaces have heat and air conditioning; dorms have electricity and heat but no Wi-Fi or internet access on site cell reception is strongest on AT&T and Verizon. Outside there's a grass athletic field, a lighted gazebo, an outdoor picnic area and a campfire ring (firewood supplied by the park), and the lighted gravel lot holds about 135 vehicles (parking is shared, not exclusive to groups). Groups reserve the camp on a four-season basis should budget time for cleaning: reservation-holders are responsible for sanitation and must supply cleaning agents (the park supplies mops, brooms and other tools) and complete a final walk-through with a ranger; additional fees may apply for some services such as gym floor covering installation. For reservations, fees and current program information call the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center at (301) 663-9388; for GPS navigation use 14840 Manahan Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780 (mailing address: Camp Round Meadow, 6602 Foxville Road, Thurmont, MD 21788).
