Perched on a 800-foot peninsula in the middle section of Cave Run Lake, Zilpo campground sits among mixed hardwoods and fronts soft, sandy beaches that make it easy to move straight from your site to the water. The campground offers 163 total campsites: 151 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 12 glamping units (the on-site cabins). Those sites are arranged across eight loops A Loop has 13 sites, B 15, C 19, D 12, E 14, F 18, G 34 and H 38 with paved roads, gravel tent pads and good site privacy under the trees. Most sites include a picnic table and campfire ring; a selection of sites has electric hookups, and central drinking water, flush toilets and showers are distributed through the loops. Practical conveniences include a dump station, a concrete boat ramp for easy lake access, and a campground store selling ice, firewood, basic camping gear and food. Reservations that include 7 or more consecutive nights qualify for a 25% discount; fees otherwise vary by site type and date. Recreation centers on Cave Run Lake and the surrounding forest: the campground's sandy beach is popular for swimming and sunning, a concrete ramp supports boating and water-skiing, and anglers fish for muskie, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Hikers can take the 2.25-mile Zilpo Mountain Loop Trail from the campground and link into a wider trail network, while the nearby Tater Knob fire tower (open to the public) provides extended views of the lake and ridgelines. The 12 cabins each sleep up to six people and include a table, two chairs and a sleeping area with two sets of bunk beds; each cabin also has a picnic table, lantern post and campfire ring outside. Pets are allowed only in cabins 41, 120, 121 and 123, and cabins 109, 123 and 136 have ramps for wheelchair access. Nature programs and interpretive offerings run during the peak season, wildlife viewing is rewarding from the shore and trails, and the nearest town is about 12 miles away near Salt Lick, KY the campground is reached via Forest Route 918 off Route 211 south of U.S. 60.
