Boat Gunnel Group Campground sits on the shoreline of Cave Run Lake within the Daniel Boone National Forest, a landscape defined by the Cumberland Plateau's steep forested slopes, sandstone cliffs and narrow ravines. The lake itself covers 8,270 acres and is managed jointly by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Forest Service; it's also known among anglers for Kentucky's state record muskie. You'll find the group site in the northern Cumberland District of the forest, in the rolling hills of northeastern Kentucky roughly an hour's drive east of Lexington via I-64 and KY-801. While Boat Gunnel is a single reservable group site rather than a collection of individual plots, several foot trails the Boat Gunnel Shoreline Trail, Oak Ridge Trail and a local Wildlife Trail leave from the area, and Twin Knobs Campground nearby provides the closest boat ramp and a beach for swimming and launching watercraft. The campground is set up for larger parties and is available by reservation only; the official count lists one site, configured to accept both RVs and tents. Facilities support a group stay with a bathhouse that has flush toilets and showers, potable drinking water, a picnic shelter equipped with a grill, serving table and electricity, and a horseshoe pit for informal recreation. Because the site is managed by federal agencies, fees, seasonal opening dates and specific reservation rules can change check reservation portals or the Daniel Boone (Morehead) district office for current rates and to book the single group site in advance. Beyond the immediate campground, the Daniel Boone National Forest offers broader opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and interpretive programs, with the Morehead Office Visitor Center providing maps and local information.
