Buckhorn Campground sits beside the dam at Buckhorn Lake on the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky, where narrow, steep valleys and branching streams give the landscape a rugged, wooded character. The campground occupies 37 sites in total: 29 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, six tent-only sites, and two boat-in sites for paddlers who want to use the lake as their campsite route. The lake itself covers about 1,230 surface acres and supports boating, water skiing and fishing; a concrete boat ramp and a swimming area are right at the campground, and anglers will find dedicated fishing areas and a nearby nature trail for shoreline access and wildlife viewing. One standout on the grounds is a national champion River Birch recorded by the National Register of Big Trees a tree measuring 205 inches around, about 117 feet tall, with an 85-foot crown a striking point of interest for anyone who takes a shoreline stroll. Facilities at Buckhorn are built to keep a range of campers comfortable: free wireless internet, electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, laundry machines, vending machines and a dump station are all on site, while on-shore recreation includes a playground, a basketball court and horseshoe pits. The park runs monthly interpretive programs during the summer months, and the surrounding area adds environmental education, hiking, auto-touring routes and historic sites like the Buckhorn Log Church; pontoon rentals are available through Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park if you want to explore beyond your own boat. Practical details such as fees, reservation windows and seasonal site availability aren't listed here, so plan to check the park's reservation system or call ahead before you go; note also that the two boat-in campsites require water access to reach. For travel, Buckhorn lies in eastern Kentucky off KY-28 west of Booneville and is commonly reached from Lexington via the Mountain Parkway and KY-11/KY-28 corridors or from Hazard via KY-15 to KY-28.
