Sylvan Park Campground sits below the dam at Wilson Lake in the wide-open Smoky Hills of north-central Kansas, where clear blue water and rolling limestone-studded prairie create a spare, open landscape. The campground has 27 reservable modern campsites 26 that accommodate both RVs and tents and one that is tent-only arranged so that most sites have sweeping prairie views and a few look directly over the Saline River as it exits the dam or the Old Saline River channel. For groups there is an eight-site group camp area and a large picnic shelter that holds up to 50 guests. On-site amenities include a boat ramp that puts the lake within easy reach, a sand volleyball court and a playground for families, plus direct access to nearby hiking routes; practical details such as fees, seasonal availability and reservation windows are handled through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, so plan to reserve sites in advance and check current rules before travel. The campground is reached from Interstate 70 north of Wilson via Highway 232 and Highway 181, making it an accessible rural stop for travelers moving through central Kansas. The recreational draw here centers on the water: Wilson Lake's clear water and the Saline River's high salinity contribute to excellent fishing, particularly for striped bass, which anglers have reported growing to impressive sizes; the lake is also stocked with walleye, large- and smallmouth bass, white bass, and channel and flathead catfish through the state's stocking program. Boating is the dominant pastime there's room for water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing and sailing and the campground's ramp makes launching straightforward. For those who prefer land-based activity, Sylvan Park contains the Bur Oak Nature Trail, a 3/4-mile self-guided interpretive walk with multiple stations, and the surrounding Post Rock Country landscape (stone fenceposts and local limestone buildings) offers a distinct regional character. Beyond the immediate campground, Wilson State Park and smaller nearby parks at Lucas and Minooka expand options, and the nearby towns particularly Lucas with its unique artistic attractions provide additional places to visit after a day on the water or the trails.
