Venango Park Campground sits along the eastern shore of Kanopolis Lake, about 30 miles southwest of Salina and reached from Highway 141 with a short turn onto Venango Road. The campground occupies a tree-dotted shoreline backed by sandstone bluffs, rolling hills and wide prairie; Loder Point Marsh, inside the campground, draws waterfowl and is a good place for early-morning birdwatching. There are 124 campsites in all: 119 sites are set up for both RVs and tents and 5 are tent-only. Sites are arranged in distinct loops ALOO (22 sites), BROA (1), CSOU (5), KPOI (8), LEL (13) and LPOI (1) and the campground offers a mix of electric-with-water, electric-only, primitive and double sites. On-site conveniences include flush toilets, drinking water, showers, a dump station, a boat ramp and a sandy beach; for day use there are shelters and a group camp available, plus a playground and a nature trail for short walks close to your site. The area around Kanopolis Lake supports a wide range of activities: boating, water sports and shore fishing for species such as bluegill, channel catfish, white crappie, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, saugeye, walleye and wiper, with seasonal trout stockings by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism. Venango Park itself contains an ATV trail that weaves across about five acres and a 1.7-mile hiking-only trail that passes through forest, grassland and wetland patches; the broader state park also offers multi-use trails for biking and horseback riding. Wildlife viewing is productive here whitetail deer, pheasants, quail, beavers, Texas horned lizards and bald eagles are all reported and nearby cultural stops include the Fort Harker Museum and the Rogers Art Gallery and Museum in Ellsworth; the local drive-in theater operates most weekend evenings. Note that reservation cancellation fees and no-show fees may apply, and some seasonal services (like trout stocking and trail access for certain activities) vary throughout the year.
