Lucas Park sits on the north shore of Wilson Lake, where clear blue water stretches across the Smoky Hills of north-central Kansas a landscape of rolling hills, buttes and mixed-grass prairie known locally as Post Rock Country for its limestone fenceposts and buildings. Boating dominates here: there's plenty of room for water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing and sailing off the park's ramps, and anglers find a diverse fishery thanks to state stocking programs. Expect walleye, large and smallmouth bass, white and striped bass, and both channel and flathead catfish; a fishing dock and easy lake access make early-morning lines straightforward. For hikers, nearby trails give varied scenery: the Bur Oak Nature Trail is a short 3/4-mile interpretive walk near Sylvan Park, while Lucas Park's Rocktown Hiking Trail is a 3-mile loop through a 305-acre wildlife area where red sandstone formations rise 15 to 30 feet, forming cliff-like shapes locals liken to a skyline. The campground itself offers 92 sites in total 91 that accommodate both RVs and tents and a single tent-only site plus a designated group site area (15 linked sites) with electric and water hookups and a large shelter for gatherings. Campsites are positioned to take advantage of lake views and provide straightforward access to hiking trails, a boat ramp and the fishing dock; a playground and picnic areas are among other day-use options around the lake.
