Mokins Bay Campground sits in a quiet stand of pines on the eastern shore of Hayden Lake in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains (the northwest flank of the Bitterroot range). The site is small and intimate there are 16 campsites in total, and each one is configured to serve both RVs and tents with paved parking spurs that make backing a trailer easier than at many forest sites. Basic amenities on-site include drinking water, vault toilets, metal grills at individual sites, and a horseshoe pit for leisurely afternoons; the campground is reached via a short stretch of gravel road. A ten-minute walk leads down to Hayden Lake, whose roughly 3,800 acres and 40-mile shoreline were sculpted by the Missoula Floods about 15,000 years ago, and springtime visitors will find native wildflowers such as trillium and buttercups brightening the forest floor. Recreation at and around Mokins Bay centers on the water and the surrounding forest. Fishing from the lake and nearby streams is common (cutthroat trout and both large- and smallmouth bass are frequent catches), while power boating, swimming and other water sports draw people to the lake; the broader Idaho Panhandle National Forests also support hiking, biking, auto touring, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle opportunities. The town of Coeur d'Alene is about 21 miles away and provides gas, groceries and restaurants if you need supplies.
