“We had a very nice stay, would do it again.”
“Would be nice to have a later check out time. Some of the other place around are 3pm verses noon. That was really the only thing that I didn't like. ”

Wallashuck Campground sits along the wooded shore of Lake Red Rock, where hardwoods shade the campsites and the Des Moines River widens into Iowa's largest reservoir. The campground has 79 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, each with electric hookups; a short walk from most loops brings you to flush and pit toilets, hot showers, drinking water and a dump station, and there's a small playground for kids. On the water, the lake supports boating, water skiing, swimming and miles of designated water trails for kayaks and canoes; anglers can expect crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike and bluegill. Hikers and cyclists will find access to paved trails in the lake area (a roughly 13-mile paved hiking/biking route) and the nearby Volksweg Trail that runs west from Pella for about 15 miles to the Des Moines River and Cordova, while the surrounding woodlands are good for wildlife viewing and casual trail walking. Practical details matter here: reservations and changes are handled through recreation.gov (or by phone at 1-877-444-6777), and a $10 service fee is deducted from any refund when you change or cancel a reservation; late cancellations may incur additional charges. The campground's location is rural but convenient roughly 10 minutes west of Pella (famous for its Dutch heritage) and about 15 minutes from Knoxville with Des Moines about an hour's drive for more services and attractions. Wildlife is a highlight in specific seasons: American white pelicans pass through each spring and fall, and large numbers of bald eagles are commonly observed from November through March; white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and other small animals are frequent sights year-round. Other on-site and area activities include picnicking, environmental education programs, horseback riding opportunities nearby, playground facilities and specialized sport sites, plus privately owned lodging options in the vicinity if you need a non-camping alternative.
