About

Howell Station Campground sits on the north bank of the Des Moines River just below Red Rock Dam, surrounded by hardwoods that shade campsites and frame river views. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the area and provides 135 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, with many sites offering 50-amp electric hookups. The campground is arranged in multiple loops including two primary sections, PPOI (52 sites) and PRAI (51 sites) and supports families and anglers alike with flush and pit toilets, coin-or-card showers, drinking water, two dump stations, playgrounds for younger visitors and easy river fishing access. Wildlife is a strong draw here: American white pelicans pass through in spring and fall migrations, large numbers of bald eagles concentrate on the lake from November through March, and white-tailed deer and wild turkeys are commonly seen along the shore and in the woods. Howell Station's address is in the Pella area (about a 10-minute drive from that Dutch-heritage town and roughly 15 minutes from Knoxville), and Des Moines is about an hour away for additional services and attractions. Recreation at Howell Station taps directly into Lake Red Rock's water and trail resources. Boating, water skiing, swimming and miles of designated water trails for kayaks and canoes are available from nearby launch points, while anglers target crappie, largemouth and striped bass, walleye, channel and flathead catfish, northern pike and bluegill. Land options include paved and unpaved hiking and biking routes the park links to paved routes in the area, including a lakeside paved trail and the longer Volksweg connection toward Pella plus horseback riding, picnicking areas, a specialized sports site and interpretive/environmental education programs offered by the project. Reservations and changes are handled through recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777); a $10.00 service fee is deducted from refunds for cancellations or changes, and late cancellations may incur additional charges.
