Payne Campground sits along the shoreline of Allatoona Lake amid gently rolling Georgia hills about 30 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, with the campground entrance off Kellogg Creek Road just a short drive from Highway 92. The campground's 56 reservable sites are spread to give room between rigs and tents; the mix includes 44 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, one site dedicated to RV use, and 11 tent-only sites. Campsite amenities at Payne are straightforward and practical: each site has a fire ring and picnic area, and the campground provides drinking water, flush toilets and coin or token showers. A dock at the campground and numerous shoreline fishing jetties put anglers within easy reach of the lake, which is regularly stocked with bass, crappie, bream, gar and catfish. Beyond the immediate camp loop you'll find a swimming beach and boat access for paddling or motorboating; eight marinas around Allatoona offer boat rentals and lakeside dining, while the Allatoona Visitor Center overlooking the dam offers exhibits on Indigenous history, gold- and iron-era industry, Civil War sites and several nearby hiking trails. Practical details to plan around are clear: nightly campsite fees range from $22 to $64, and sites must be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777); for facility-specific questions you can call (678) 721-6700. The Corps' reservation policies include a $10 service fee for changes or standard cancellations, and late cancellations (the day before or day of arrival) will generally forfeit the first night's use fee in addition to any service fee; no-shows can be charged up to $20 and lose use fees. Refund requests must be made within 14 days after your scheduled departure. Once you're on site, activities available in the wider Allatoona Lake area include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing and environmental-education opportunities, and nearby attractions such as Red Top Mountain State Park, the Etowah Indian Mounds and downtown Acworth or Cartersville make easy day trips from the campground.
