“No place for a tent. Poor description on the website”
“The sites were nice, rent platform, nice picnic table, fire pit, ample parking. Refurbished Campground since my last visit, more bathrooms. Bathrooms were clean and ample toilet paper. Loved the walkability to climbing . ”
“Nice campsite with vault toilet and fire pit. Only warning is that really strong toilet smells drift over to site 1 (and I’m sure others near it) so would recommend choosing a site farther away. Otherwise no complaints ”

Sand Gulch Campground sits about 14 miles north of Cañon City at roughly 6,400 feet, tucked along the Shelf Road corridor where long bands of pocketed limestone rise above narrow canyons. The campground is prized by sport climbers for easy walking access to the Contest and Freeform walls many moderate routes are a 10 20 minute walk from sites and the surrounding slopes of piñon and juniper give the campsites a dry, high-desert feel with sweeping cliff views. Beyond climbing, the area is a good launching point for short hikes, mountain biking, horseback outings and nearby 4x4 loops; anglers can hike down to Fourmile Creek, and the wider Royal Gorge region offers rafting, train rides and scenic driving along the Gold Belt National Scenic Byway. Practical details are straightforward: Sand Gulch has 17 total campsites (this total includes the campground's group option), with 12 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 5 tent-only sites. Sites are small and oriented toward tent use but each includes a parking space, picnic table and metal fire ring; individual sites are limited to two vehicles and eight people. The campground is open year-round, but services are minimal there's a vault toilet on site; no drinking water, electrical hookups or trash service so bring your own water and firewood and plan to pack out trash. Fees are modest: individual sites $7 per night, group sites $14 per night, plus an $8 non-refundable reservation fee for each reservation. Sand Gulch provides a small day-use lot (with overflow parking and trail access nearby), while other Shelf Road trailheads offer larger equestrian parking and corrals if you need them.
