Jumbo Campground sits on the northern slope of Colorado's Grand Mesa at about 9,800 feet, positioned between Jumbo and Sunset Lakes along the Grand Mesa National Scenic and Historic Byway. The site is shaded by mature spruce and aspen, and most campsites look out over one of the small lakes. The campground contains 26 sites in total: 22 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, while 4 are tent-only; the campground offers a mix of single- and double-family sites and most sites include electrical hookups, with a few single sites designated as accessible. Every site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided on site. Access is via State Route 65, roughly 13 miles south of Mesa, Colorado check current road and weather conditions before you go, and consult the Forest Service or recreation.gov for up-to-date information on fees and reservations. The immediate recreation opportunities center on the lakes and the trail network: Jumbo and Sunset Lakes permit only non-motorized watercraft, making them quiet places for canoeing and bank fishing for brown, brook and rainbow trout, and the broader Mesa Lakes area contains many more small, fishable waterways. For land-based activity, the nearby West Bench Trail No. 501 is open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders and runs for several miles through the surrounding forest and meadows. Wildlife viewing is common deer and elk frequent the area and the Grand Mesa National Scenic and Historic Byway provides a longer auto-tour that climbs to higher forested plateaus and dozens of additional trailheads. The Grand Mesa Visitor Center at Island Lake is a short drive away with interpretive exhibits and a high-altitude wildflower garden; the town of Cedaredge, about 26 miles from the campground, offers historic sites like Pioneer Town and seasonal events such as the October Applefest.
