“The site was flat, and had a beautiful area below with the fire pit and picnic table. Very private.”

Sitting at roughly 10,000 feet on Colorado's Grand Mesa, Island Lake Campground is a compact, high-plateau site that puts anglers and trail users within easy reach of water and routes. The campground contains 32 sites that can accommodate both tents and RVs, and most sites sit beneath a dense stand of mature spruce that offers shade and a quiet, forested feel; a few sites open up to wider views down into Grand Valley and the chain of lakes below. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring, and three vault restrooms are scattered through the loop. Trail access for both hiking and off-road vehicles begins right from the campground, and Island Lake itself lies only about a tenth of a mile away there you'll find a boat ramp, a fish-cleaning station and an additional restroom, plus day-use and boat-trailer parking available for a small fee. At this elevation expect cool nights and rapidly changing weather, so come prepared with warm layers and reliable shelter. Recreation options are plentiful both immediately and across the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest. Island Lake is part of a landscape with more than 300 fishing lakes and thousands of miles of trails and forest roads that support hiking, biking, horseback riding, OHV travel, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing; sections of the Continental Divide and Colorado Trail run on the forest's flanks. The area also draws climbers, wildlife viewers (deer and elk are commonly seen), boaters and photographers, and historic mining sites and scenic byways add cultural interest to day trips. To plan a stay, note the short gravel Forest Route drive off State Route 65 north of Cedaredge that brings you to the campground; check current fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings with the Grand Mesa/Uncompahgre/Gunnison Forest office or recreation.gov before you go.
