“We stay there every year. The campground host is very helpful and friendly. I believe his name is Tim. Only wish is that the water was still turned on that time of year.”
“Clean, quiet campground located in a great location for fishing and hiking. Campground host was very friendly and helpful. ”
“The campground has been well cared for with some of the cleanest bathrooms we have seen. Tim is a great campground host and does an amazing job of taking care of things. It was quiet and we enjoyed all of the hiking opportunities right from camp.”

Shepherds Rim Campground sits at 9,720 feet on the southeast side of Trappers Lake and occupies a small stretch of forest road just past the lake outlet; you'll find it on the right as you travel south from the outlet area. The campground contains 15 sites total: 14 sites that can accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site. Each site comes with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; vault toilets and drinking water are available on site but there are no electrical hook-ups. If you arrive by RV, note that an RV dump station is provided elsewhere within the Trappers Lake complex rather than at the campground itself. Practical details to remember: once your reservation start date has begun neither Recreation.gov nor the campground manager can modify your reservation, and for facility-specific information or current conditions (fees, seasonal openings, road status) you should call the Trappers Lake/White River National Forest office at (970) 878-9253. The setting here is defined less by manicured amenities and more by proximity to the Flat Tops Wilderness and the lake's open water. Trappers Lake covers roughly 302 surface acres and supports a native strain of cutthroat trout; Colorado Parks and Wildlife operates a spawn collection station at the Cabin Creek inlet during May and June. Because the lake lies entirely within designated wilderness, motorized boats and wheeled boat-transport carts are prohibited, so boating is limited to non-motorized craft and fishing is generally quieter and more traditional. The larger White River National Forest around Trappers Lake offers a wide range of recreational opportunities hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and more and wildlife such as bighorn sheep, elk, pika and ptarmigan are commonly associated with these high-elevation forests and ridgelines.
