At 7,800 feet on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, North Fork Campground sits among a tall aspen grove above the North Fork of the White River, with many sites opening onto the river valley while a thick understory of tall grass and wild roses provides a sense of separation between campsites. The campground has 28 sites, each set up to accommodate both tents and RVs, and most are widely spaced rather than packed in; you won't find electrical hookups, but you will find picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, drinking water, and on-site firewood. Practical details and reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; note the reservation policy that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify it. For facility-specific questions call (970) 878-9253. The site is reached from I-70 west of Denver near Rifle then north on Highway 13 toward Meeker and along County Road 8 for about 32 miles to the campground entrance. The immediate recreation focus here is river access and backcountry access: the North Fork of the White River runs across from the campground and is known for fly fishing, with rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout commonly found in its waters. Beyond fishing, the area connects to a network of OHV trails (ride with caution domestic cattle may graze nearby), and offers routes and terrain for hikers, mountain bikers, hunters and horseback riders. For whitewater or small-craft paddling, stretches of the White River downstream are navigable at many levels; wildlife viewing is excellent year-round, with elk and bighorn in the mountains and alpine species higher on the slopes. If you want specifics about seasonal access or current conditions (trail openings, river flows, etc.), check Recreation.gov or call the campground number before you head out.
