Sarah S ★ 4 · Jul 2023This site has been a family favorite gathering place once a year for about 10 years now. We love how it is tucked back from the main road, but has a lively creek to cool off in and allow the kids to play until we go over to the reservoir. The Ranger that checked on us was a nice man as well. The lock on the toilet has been broken for a few years so I recommend devising a plan when going with a group to alert them that you’re in there. I’d like a reserved sign at the gate down the road to keep others from venturing all the way there and turning around in the campsite.
Matthew W ★ 5 · Jul 2023This is a great site but one of the smaller "group" sites. If you have several couples, this can hold about 3-4 four to six person tents total, and an additional two campers in the parking area. Parking is sufficient and not an issue, its just the site that is small for being a "group" site. I would suggest 3 tents max, and a camper or two. Our 16ft camper fit just fine. Stars were amazing. location is great. Off the road, can't hear any traffic, and you have the area to yourself. Would HIGHLY recommend this site.
Tracy S ★ 5 · Jun 2021Loved the privacy of the group site. No traffic coming into site, except for occasional ranger. We were able to fit two trailers and 4 cars easily. We also had a tent set up in the walk-down site next to creek. There is only morning minimal shade so it was quite warm in afternoon (we stayed mid-June). The vault toilets were clean and checked daily by rangers. Potable water pump available onsite. Only delta: vault toilet door did not lock

Red Creek Group Site sits on the north side of U.S. Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose, about 31/2 miles west of Elk Creek, with the West Elk Mountains to the north and a matrix of federal lands all around Gunnison National Forest to the north, the Black Canyon to the west and Uncompahgre National Forest to the southwest. The campground's immediate landscape is semi-arid shrubland punctuated by large cottonwoods that follow Red Creek as it runs out of the West Elks toward Blue Mesa Reservoir. By mid to late summer the creek is often low enough to wade and hides deeper pools where small fish congregate. The Curecanti reservoirs themselves Blue Mesa, Morrow Point and Crystal are the defining water features in the basin, and the Gunnison River's descent farther downstream is carved through the steep, narrow cliffs of the Black Canyon. Wildlife is a constant presence here: expect mule deer, elk, prairie dogs and bighorn sheep, and be aware that mountain lions, black bears and the occasional moose are present; bald eagles commonly fish the area in winter. Practical details are straightforward: there is a single group campsite on site (one total site) designed to host groups of 9 to 20 people, and it accepts both RVs and tents, though recreation vehicles over 22'' are not recommended. The site provides direct access to Red Creek Road for additional hiking into national forest lands and functions as a quiet base for the wide range of activities available in Curecanti National Recreation Area auto touring, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, fishing (brown, rainbow and lake trout plus Kokanee salmon, with an especially dense Kokanee population at Blue Mesa), hiking (the Dillon Pinnacles Trail is a roughly 4-mile lollipop trail for views of volcanic spires), horseback riding, hunting, swimming and wildlife viewing. A short drive brings you to the Cimarron Canyon Rail Exhibit and the last remaining railroad trestle on the Gunnison route, a good photo stop with access to some of the canyon's tallest cliffs. Fees, reservations, specific seasonal openings and on-site amenities (such as potable water, toilets, or hookups) are handled by Curecanti NRA check the park's official information before your trip to confirm availability and any regulations for group camping.
