Perched on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir, Elk Creek Campground sits at 7,540 feet in a wide sagebrush landscape where trees are sparse and precipitation averages under 12 inches a year so expect open skies more than shady campsites. The campground fronts Colorado's largest body of water (Blue Mesa has about 96 miles of shoreline and supports the country's largest kokanee salmon fishery), and its 150 sites are split to suit a range of setups: 72 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 62 RV-only sites and 16 tent-only sites. Sites are arranged in four loops Loop A has 53 sites, Loop B 40, Loop C 30 and Loop D 27 with electric hookups located in Loop D (both 30- and 50-amp service available); there is an additional $6 electricity attribute fee for standard electric sites. Practical notes: cell phone service is limited here, campfire programs run through the summer, and the Elk Creek, Lake Fork and Iola boat ramps are open for the season. Elk Creek functions as a water-sports hub for Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Upper Gunnison basin: anglers chase kokanee salmon and rainbow trout, windsurfers and water-skiers find steady stretches of open water, and paddlers and kayakers can explore the reservoir's coves and firmer currents. Swimming is permitted throughout the roughly 20-mile-long reservoir, and birders can spot bald eagles year-round along the shoreline. Beyond water activities, Curecanti supports a broad range of outdoor pursuits auto touring, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and wildlife viewing are all part of the local mix while nearby attractions include the Cimarron Rail Exhibit and the last remaining railroad trestle on the Black Canyon of the Gunnison route. If you plan to visit, confirm current reservation and cancellation rules before you go and come prepared for an exposed, high-desert lakeshore with minimal tree cover.
