Hovenweep National Monument

Hovenweep Campground sits just a short drive from the monument's visitor center and offers a small, quietly rustic base for exploring the ruins. The loop contains 31 sites laid out for tent camping, with a handful of wider spots that will take RVs up to 36 feet; each site includes a tent pad, a metal fire ring and a picnic table sheltered by a simple shade structure. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, and one campsite is designated wheelchair-accessible (it was not designed for tent camping, so plan accordingly). Group stays are limited to eight people and two vehicles, the campground is open year-round, and sites are operated on a first-come, first-served basis. The monument itself preserves six prehistoric villages multistory towers perched on canyon rims and even balanced on boulders so staying at the campground puts those stone structures within easy reach of a day visit. Because Hovenweep is in a remote corner of southeastern Utah, don't rely on GPS: the visitor center lies roughly 40 45 miles from Cortez, Colorado and from both Blanding and Bluff, Utah, and the park asks visitors to follow the driving directions posted on its webpage. Check that same site for current fees, road conditions, and seasonal notices before you go, and come prepared with your own water, food and fuel since amenities are minimal.
