“Great campground, privates sites with a nice creek. ”
“Great campsite - plenty of shade and access to the river. The camp hosts were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the visitor center and the nature trail as well. Highly recommend, just watch out for poison oak this time of year!”
“We had an amazing time at Wheeler Gorge!”

Wheeler Gorge Campground sits along Matilija Creek in a mixed oak and sycamore forest where most campsites enjoy shade under the canopy and the noise of moving water. The campground's layout follows the creek valley, so some sites are right beside the stream and others look up toward open mountain vistas; summer highs can reach about 95°F, so the shade is welcome. The site has a long history original work by local Boy Scouts and a historic stone home remain on the property and Ventura and the Pacific are roughly 20 miles to the south along Highway 33, with Santa Paula and Highway 150 providing another common approach from the Los Angeles area. A short loop, the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail, begins at the upper end of the campground and threads through dense creekside vegetation to a hillside viewpoint; wildflowers often line the path. A small swimming hole near the highway draws visitors in warm months, while fishing in the creek is possible but sporadic (the stream is not stocked) and paddling in a kayak or canoe is not recommended. The campground is open year-round and has 66 sites, all configured to accept both tents and RVs; paved parking spurs vary in length and can accommodate RVs up to about 35 feet. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and accessible vault toilets are provided, but there is no drinking water on site plan to bring all the water you'll need and to pack out your trash. Reservations are used alongside some first-come, first-served sites; single-site reservations cover up to 6 people and 1 vehicle (the site maximum is 8 people or 2 vehicles, with a $10-per-person-per-night charge after 6 and a $10 charge for a second vehicle), while double-site reservations cover up to 12 people and 2 vehicles (maximum 16 people and 4 vehicles, with the same $10-per-person or per-vehicle overage fees applied at the facility). Ranger-led educational programs and interpretive tours are offered year-round from the nearby visitor center, and the location provides convenient access to hiking, swimming, picnicking and other Los Padres National Forest recreation.
