What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (270 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“The campground is beautiful! The hosts were especially helpful and friendly. Feels very "wildernessy," but if you're hungry for brunch, the Pine House is an easy walk from your camp site. ”

Michael B 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice spur trail directly from large campground w/spacious campsites. Fun mountain biking in the area and on dirt roads nearby. Easy access to a couple great spots to eat if you don't feel like cooking on check-out day. Friendly camp host.”

About

Burnt Rancheria sits at about 6,000 feet in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area of Cleveland National Forest, roughly 50 miles east of San Diego off the Sunrise Scenic Byway. The campground is set among pines and oaks with an open oak grove that drops away to desert views; on clear days you can make out the Salton Sea to the southeast from nearby overlooks. A short walk from the campground brings you to the Desert View Picnic Site, which looks down to the desert some 6,000 feet below, and a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail passes close by hikers and horseback riders may use this trail, but biking is not permitted on any portion of the PCT. Night-sky programming is a highlight in summer: the San Diego State University Observatory runs "star parties" most Saturday evenings (schedules are posted at the Laguna Mountain Visitor Information Center or by calling 619-473-8547). Restrooms, potable water and a campground host are on site. Practical camping details are straightforward: Burnt Rancheria contains 56 campsites in several loops Amphitheater (10 sites), Lilac (11), Pinyon (21) and Yucca (14) with 48 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 8 sites designated tent-only. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring; there are no electric or sewer hookups and no dump station on site (the nearest dump station is at Buckman Springs Rest Area, 4 miles east of Pine Valley on I-8). The campground has coin-operated showers and restrooms (showers operate only during the reservation season) and firewood is sold by the campground host. Day hiking, picnicking, interpretive programs, guided hikes and family campfire events are common in summer; for up-to-date hours, availability and reservation or fee information, stop at the Laguna Mountain Visitor Information Center or contact the campground host before heading up the Sunrise Byway.
