At roughly 6,000 feet in the Laguna Mountains, Laguna Campground provides a pine-and-oak forest setting with nearby meadow and easy access to Little Laguna Lake a short hike that appeals to photographers and day hikers. The campground contains five loops with a total of 70 sites: Meadow (18), Roadside (8), Shady (25), Sunny (16) and Walk-In (3). Of those 70 sites, 53 accommodate both RVs and tents, 8 are RV-only and 9 are tent-only; sites tend to sit fairly close to one another and one site meets accessibility standards. Practical amenities include campfire rings, flush-toilet restrooms and coin-operated showers. Part of the campground is fenced to protect habitat for the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly, so visitors should respect fence boundaries and comply with maximum site-occupancy rules. The campground lies about 50 miles east of San Diego take I-8 to Sunrise Highway and follow the road roughly 15 miles to the Laguna/El Prado area (just beyond the 26-mile marker) and stop at the entrance station for campground information and site location. Recreationally, Laguna is a gateway to an extensive trail network: the Laguna Meadow trails, the Big Laguna Trail (noted for wildflowers in April and May), and a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail that runs north south through the area. Hikers can return to the trailhead by cutting through the campground or by taking the PCT north; in wet years Big Laguna Lake often holds water by December or January and attracts ducks and other birds. The broader Laguna Mountain Recreation Area supports horseback riding, mountain biking, horse camping and longer hiking routes, while on-site interpretive programs are offered at the campground amphitheater and San Diego State University sponsors summer "Star Parties" most Saturday evenings (check schedules at the visitor center or call 619-473-8547). For fees, reservations, seasonal openings (the mountain facility is most commonly used from summer through early fall) and current program information, stop at the entrance station or contact the visitor center before your trip.
