Wooded Hill Group Campground sits high in the Laguna Mountains at about 6,000 feet, surrounded by stands of pine and oak that shade a single, large group site. The setting cools off noticeably compared with coastal San Diego roughly 50 miles to the west and the drive up Sunrise Highway threads through forests of pine, spruce and fir and opens onto mountain meadows and viewpoints. Hikers and riders can step off the campground onto an extensive network of trails: the long Pacific Crest Trail passes through the area, and the Wooded Hills Nature Trail is just west on the Sunrise Scenic Byway, where a short climb reaches the highest wooded point on Laguna Mountain and, on clear days, views extending to Point Loma and the Channel Islands. Nearby trail systems such as Big Laguna and Aqua Dulce expand options for horseback riding, mountain biking and day hikes, and the national forest offers broader recreational opportunities including interpretive programs, OHV routes, and organized star parties at the SDSU observatory. The facility is designed for group use: TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1, with SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: - 1 RV Sites configured as a single large campsite that can accommodate groups of up to about 110 people. The site includes parking spurs for trailers or RVs (maximum spur length varies from 20 40 ft.), but there are no electrical or water hookups, so plan for self-contained rigs or generator limits as appropriate. Basic amenities on site are picnic tables, vault toilets and a large communal fire circle ideal for group gatherings but with primitive comforts, so bring potable water and pack out waste as required. Wooded Hill is open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day; for current fees, reservation requirements and any temporary restrictions (fire rules, group permits), check Cleveland National Forest resources or Recreation.gov before you go.
