What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (205 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“We stayed for a weekend in mid-October, the weather was great, and the campsite and river were not crowded. Started with a hike up the gorge road then spent the rest of the day on the day use river area. The bathrooms were in great shape. ”

About

Arroyo Seco Campground sits along the Arroyo Seco River at roughly 1,200 feet and looks out toward the peaks of the Ventana Wilderness, an oak- and scrub-covered hillside punctuated with spring lupines and vivid fall color. The site is a semi-rustic but developed facility with a total of 39 campsites: 22 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 17 that are tent-only. Roads through the campground are paved and some campsites are level and large enough for most RVs, but there are no utility hookups and there is no dump station, so plan on dry camping. Every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; the first loop has accessible flush toilets, coin-operated showers and drinking water, while the more primitive loop offers vault toilets and water. Several sites and facilities are fully accessible, and a group campsite reservable separately can handle up to 50 people and 10 vehicles, supplying group tables, a campfire circle, vault toilets and drinking water. Recreation at Arroyo Seco blends lake and river opportunities with direct access to backcountry trails. A small, non-body-contact lake near the group site supports bass and catfish and allows non-motorized boating; anglers age 16 and older need a California fishing license. The adjacent Arroyo Seco River has a modest beach where wading and swimming are possible, though water levels and both boating and swimming conditions fluctuate with seasonal rainfall. Trails lead into the Ventana Wilderness motorized use beyond the gated road is not permitted without Forest Service authorization and the 15.5-mile Santa Lucia Trail provides hiking and horseback access into the gorge. For other services and rules (site fees, reservation policies for individual campsites, seasonal closures), contact the Los Padres National Forest office before you go; the campground is reached from Highway 101 near the small Arroyo Seco community, roughly 50 miles from Monterey and about 30 miles from the west side of Pinnacles National Monument.
