“Great except no water in toilets, only portapotties. If it wasn't for that it would be awesome, but I love it here.”

Plaskett Creek Campground sits on the east side of Highway 1 in west-central California's Los Padres National Forest, a short drive north from Sand Dollar Beach one of the largest sandy stretches in the Big Sur area and roughly 65 miles north of San Luis Obispo along Hwy 1 (note: Highway 1 is temporarily closed from the Monterey area, so check road conditions before you travel). The site offers 40 grassy campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill, but there are no utility hookups. Basic comfort facilities are provided throughout the loop: flush toilets, sinks, and potable drinking water, with an accessible flush toilet located near Site 10. The campground also contains three group sites, each able to handle large parties (up to 40 people and 10 vehicles) additional vehicles incur an extra fee. Standard fees cover up to 6 people and 1 vehicle; because policies and access can change, confirm reservation requirements and any seasonal restrictions with the forest service before you arrive. Outdoor options here start with Sand Dollar Beach, just minutes on foot, where surfing, swimming, shoreline fishing and beachcombing are the main draws anglers 16 and older must carry a valid fishing permit and dogs are permitted on leash with waste pickup. Short coastal trails climb to bluffs and hidden coves, and a short drive opens up broader Los Padres opportunities: longer hiking routes, mountain biking and equestrian trails that pass waterfalls, redwood groves and mountain meadows. The campground itself sits at about 200 feet elevation beneath a scattered canopy of Monterey pine, cypress and aromatic cedars, and surf can be heard from many sites. Wildlife sightings are common foxes, deer, raccoons and the occasional bobcat and while mountain lions and bears live in the surrounding landscape, they have not been known to enter the campground; follow posted food-storage and wildlife-safety rules to minimize encounters. The forest as a whole also supports auto touring, climbing, off-highway vehicle areas, picnicking, visitor centers and various water-sports opportunities if you want to explore farther afield.
