Panther Flat Campground sits a short walk from the bright blue Smith River amid a mature stand of Douglas fir, cedar and Pacific madrone, offering shade and a sense of seclusion without feeling remote. The campground has 38 sites in total, and all 38 are configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; there is at least one double site for larger groups and several sites on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites come with standard camp tables and steel campfire rings with grills, and the campground is noted for having some of the largest parking aprons in the area. Practical amenities include accessible flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers and drinking water; the Gasquet Ranger Station Visitor Center nearby provides free maps and brochures and is the best place to check current fees, reservation options, seasonal openings or road conditions before you go. Recreation is focused on the Smith River and the surrounding backcountry: swimming, sunbathing, rafting and fishing are all common from the campground's doorstep, and anglers target salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout. The river can run placid or push whitewater up to Class 5, so plan river activities with current water and safety information in hand. There are no trailheads inside Panther Flat, but Elk Camp Ridge, High Dome and French Hill trailheads lie within about 10 miles, and a short botanical trail to a Darlingtonia (cobra lily) bog is roughly a mile away; the broader Six Rivers National Forest also supports biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle routes. Panther Flat is accessed from Highway 199 about 16 miles east of U.S. 101 north of Crescent City, with Redwood National Park and the Pacific coast both within roughly 20 miles, and local events such as the Gasquet Raft Race in July and the Del Norte County Fair in August add occasional liveliness to the area.
