“Nice simple campground. Make sure to bring water with you.”
“Map not accurate for site locations. Site 15 is tight and trees need cut to make it better or just use as a tent site”
“A great campground if all those in redwood national park get filled up. No flowing water in the bathroom but overall is pretty good. Remember to get a fire permit even for gas stove. ”

Grassy Flat Campground sits along Highway 199 in Six Rivers National Forest, a shady stand of Douglas firs and hardwoods edged by huckleberry shrubs and only steps from the Smith River's clear blue water. The site is small and family-scale: 19 single-family campsites total, 15 of which accommodate both RVs and tents and four designated tent-only sites. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and accessible vault toilets are provided on site, but there is no potable water bring your own supply. Some sites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis, and RV use is possible in the majority of sites, so plan accordingly for vehicle length and hookups (none are provided). For location, the campground is reached by driving about 18 miles east on Highway 199 from U.S. 101 north of Crescent City; the small town of Gasquet and its local airstrip sit roughly six miles away, and Madrone Flat across the bridge offers an alternate place to access the river. The Smith River is the campground's principal draw: swimmers and sunbathers use the calm pockets, while rafters take on sections that can run into Class 5 whitewater downstream; anglers regularly seek salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout. While there are no trailheads inside the campground itself, trail access is plentiful within a short drive Elk Camp Ridge, High Dome and French Hill trailheads lie within about 10 miles and the larger Six Rivers National Forest supports a wide range of recreation from horseback riding and mountain biking to auto touring and OHV use. Annual local events such as the Gasquet Raft Race in July and the Del Norte County Fair in August bring extra activity to the area. Because site availability, seasonal openings and any fees or reservation options are set by the Forest Service and can change, check current conditions and campground status with the Six Rivers ranger district before you go.
